Save It For The Weekend - Skegss

It's always nice when you have gigs or live music lined up & across the weekend it was really nice to do something completely different & surprisingly cultural. At the State Theatre in the Sydney CBD on Saturday night, Simon & I went to go see The Russian Ballet's take on Swan Lake.

I felt like such a little kid eyes stardazed, as we walked into the main foyer of the State Theatre before taking our seats with a classy glass of red each. I've definitely been quite lucky as around this time last year I saw Russian ballet's The Nutcracker with Mum, but this ballet would be a first experience for Simon & Swan Lake truly is such a great story to introduce anyone into seeing ballet! Scattered across the audience were a mixture of ages, & I could see between the crowds that there were quite a few lucky little girls in the audience who you never know maybe one day dream of being Ballet dancers themselves.

If you have never been to the State Theatre, the ceiling is just absolutely breathtaking & the marble stairs in the main foyer that roll down each side make you feel like you've just transported to a classic Disney movie. The theatre in its entirety has a very pretty interior & its timeless details really show it off ie. Velvet Thrones, Intricate wallpaper, Butterfly themed bathroom, golden bannisters & a Lion shaped drinking fountain. In the main theatre, the roof design continues & dotted across the mesmerising roof were a number of chandeliers surrounding an even large focal chandelier. From the moment we sat down, you could tell that the audience were in a buzz of excitement & all of us were just waiting on the theatre lights to dim & the stage curtains to rise.

Once the show began, I could barely contain my excitement as it was when the curtains rose I truly realised actually how well known the story of Swan Lake was to me. The dancing was just fabulous & each dancer really danced with such grace, so light on their feet! My favourite part of any musical, opera or ballet is the costumes & they surely didn't disappoint. The crowd were very excited when the most famous song of the story came on "Dance of the Little Swans". Simon was also quite surprised how many songs he recognised from the story as well. I couldn't clap hard enough at the end of the show, it was truly magical & I totally recommend it as a cultural experience. Next year the Russian Ballet will return again, this time with the story of Sleeping Beauty.

Then Sunday we headed to the Marrickville Festival, another festival showcasing the Multicultural melting pot that is the Inner West, across the day there were quite a number of street bands playing from School Showcases to International Touring bands. The favourite band of the day was easily Fantasy Spirit of Earth, Wind & Fire who quite impressively impersonate Funk & Motown band Earth, Wind & Fire.

The crowd favourite was easily torn between Boogie Wonderland & Let's Groove then when September came on the whole crowd lit up & sung loudly. The band were very impressive, there was at least 9 band members on stage & what a way to end the festival!

Rolling in from the weekend adventures, this now brings me into this week's song!

Skeggs are a trio of mates originally from Byron Bay, & they are well known for their Surf & Garage Rock. The band consists of Toby Cregan (Bass), Ben Reed (Vocals, Guitar) & Jonny Lani (Drums) & the band started in 2014 when Lani & Reed who have been friends since they were kids reconnected.

Their debut song in 2014 was called "L.S.D" which the band clarified wasn't about acid but about the term "Live.Sleep.Die". Very laid-back style of rock, which matches their life in Byron, surrounded by beaches & quality surfing waves.

Save It For The Weekend is their latest single that dropped at the beginning of the month, the band have been quiet for just over a year now with their last debut album "My Own Mess" but this song grabbed my attention. With Summer already wriggling its way between Spring it's a good reflection how hot this Summer is going to be. This song transports me next to a beach, sitting in a chair with a book & a cocktail. I just want to be lazily listening to this song, somewhere nice.

Skeggs also played on the Sunday date of Yours & Owls Festival, which is a shame because I would have loved to have seen them live!

Save It For The Weekend was born after their last US Tour, as the guys headed into the US desert to make new music at Joshua Tree CA Studio. In November they will be touring the US again, before returning to Australia to perform at Good Things Festival in December.

Hope that you like this track as much as I do, & hope your week is fabulous as well!

Cheers

Amy
