Uni holidays are now over & it's straight back into the uni life! I've got two subjects this semester, & for the first time in a while both subjects have exams so I could be gearing up for a busy 3 months ahead! Luckily for me at the beginning of last week, dad managed to get a large pile of CDs from our neighbours that were moving out so I've got plenty of new & old music to keep me occupied! Last night I was listening to a sample CD from my own collection, as promised I finally cleared out some old CDs for charity & in the process found a couple of CDs that haven't been listened to in ages! I received this mix from the days that I would frequent Fringe Bar in Paddington. Fringe Bar seems slightly a distant memory, it used to be a place that I used to frequent but unfortunately have not frequented in a long while. I've heard & seen that the interior of this awesome place has been gutted & renovated which I still feel slightly sad about. The nights spent there indulging in bar snacks & cocktail jugs, before a disco dance on the checkered dance floor, birdcages swinging from the roof & sticky carpets.
Hearing that hour mix last night took me back to 2007, where funk & soul mixed with dance, Bang Gang Deejays, Justice, Ed Banger, Daft Punk, Phoenix, MGMT was thrown with Lionel Richie, Diana Ross & The Human League. I remember in the times before I could even go out clubbing, daydreaming slightly of what it could be like. Indie darlings & alternatives dressed in their own styles would regularly frequent the photo galleries of the free magazines I'd read. Once I was old enough to go out I got to be there in that moment too. Unfortunately now in 2016, that night scene has altered slightly. It's still there & the party people will still party, but the excitement has over the years been slowly fading out. Well known places are closing & or are being gutted out & luckily some places are even been given face lifts.
With last week being my last week for a while of uni freedom I actually for a friends birthday went back to a famous haunt of mine. El Topo which was previously well known to the kids of Eastern Suburbs as "The Eastern" where most Wednesdays *ahem* nearly every Wednesday the girls & I would be there ordering steak/salad, numerous & copious amounts of $3 drinks & then boogie the night away to RnB & dance. Interesting fact but this was actually the exact place that I learnt how to even dance/booty shake & appreciate RnB.
Lately there's been quite a lot of new music & a lot of amazing collaborations, still obsessed with last weeks track Jarryd Jame's "1000x" & to be honest I think I've now played it nearly that amount! This Friday I'm also going to head to Newtown & check out Alex Lahey's free event single launch so there should be a gig report for next week!
This week's track, was only heard last week & I'm already hooked. Wrap your ears around it below:
Illy is an Australian hip hop recording artist from Frankston in Melbourne, Australia. When I first heard of Illy it was 2010 & he had just released his second album "The Chase". His song "It Can Wait" became quite a favourite of mine & the album was just solid. As well as "Put Em in The Air", "Heard it All", "Cigarettes" & "On & On". Many memories listening to "It Can Wait" & being in the car singing;
Happiness, happiness is fine but its momentary A momentary lapse of reality Reality is fine, but for the moment it can wait I'm addicted to the chase of my Happiness, happiness is fine but its momentary A momentary lapse of reality Reality is fine, but for the moment it can wait I'm addicted to the chase of my happiness
"It Can Wait" still is a fave of mine which you can listen to by clicking here
Illy like Seth Sentry, was an artist I've seen at Come Together but I've also seen him at his own show at the Metro theatre in 2013. "Papercuts" features Sydney singer Vera Blue (Well known as Celia Pavey who was a contestant from Team Delta in last years "The Voice" & also the support act for when I saw Matt Corby late May!) Between Vera's vocals & Illy's storytelling this track is close to becoming a favourite of mine. Looking forward to when Illy releases more singles & hopefully soon an album!
Hope you all like it too & have an amazing week!
Cheers Amy
