Finding it a little hard today to believe that we've made it back to Tuesday, but the long weekend was truly magical. Not just because we all had an extra day up our sleeves (thank you to any retailers open yesterday/public holiday services so we could all still get a reasonable coffee!) But it was truly magical because it was my first full weekend of true freedom! Friday morning I handed in my final assignment for the semester & it felt like a huge balloon of laughing gas had hit my stomach, it was just amazing! To celebrate on Friday after work I had a couple of bevvies, dinner & finally got around to trying off my wish list Aqua S! I tried the sea salt & green mint & it was absolutely amazing, they even have an option for toppings so I got a toasted marshmallow.
I also treated myself to new music last week, I spent what felt like hours in JB but I'm happy with my haul. I ended up purchasing:
Ladyhawke "Wild Things" - This album was released beginning of June & has been an album I've anticipated since I saw her live at Newtown Social Club in March. Really digging her tracks "Sweet Fascination", "A Love Song" & "Let it Roll"
Broods - "Evergreen" - I've heard Broods a few times off the radio & have been really digging their tracks "Bridges" & "Mother & Father" intrigued to still hear the rest of this album!
Gang of Youths - "The Positions" - Their song "Magnolia" which has been a previously featured track on Play it Forward >> has given me goosebumps for a very very long time. Well I finally got round to purchasing their album & so far what I've heard has been more goosebumps inducing. Really digging their tracks "Restraint & Release", "Vital Signs" & "Knuckles White Dry". These Sydney boys definately have got me hooked.
Boys Noize - "Mayday" - Still yet to listen to this album, but I have fond memories of electro trash & chants of "Oi" to this guy. A German electronic producer, his tracks are well known to be gritty, trashy & purely electronic. This album to date is a Boy Noize singular tribute to his art after a decade of collabs with artists such as Erol Alkan, Tiga & Feadz.
Catfish & The Bottlemen - "The Ride" - Also still yet to listen to this album but from Catfish & the Bottlemen I've only heard their like a version of "Black Skinhead" by Kanye West & "Read my Mind" by The Killers. So I'm intrigued to still hear the rest of what they have to offer!
Gordi - Clever Disguise - This EP was released in May but I've managed to get it now, Gordi has such an intriguing tone I was won over by her moody cover of "Avant Gardener" by my all time fave Courtney Barnett. The EP is simply beautiful, I'm really digging her track "Can We Work it Out" & "Nothing as it Seems".
So to celebrate the beginning of uni holidays I attended Curve Ball at Carriageworks; an event curated by Vivid. Can I just say it had such a great feeling about it. The air was full of excitement, & you could feel that there was a genuine feeling that everyone was happy to be there to have a good time. Managed to see most sets up until the headliner ZHU, forgot how much I really enjoy listening to Cosmos Midnight they remind me so heavily of Porter Robinson & Wave Racer, Joy was simply amazing she also rocked this super fluffy jacket while hauntingly singing & Basenji although there was slight technical difficulties got the crowd back quickly with his track "Dawn". ZHU the headliner was great, few remixes between his main tracks "Automatic", "Faded" & "In the Morning", lots of boogie-ing was had by all.
This week's track is a cute little number I've had stuck in my head for a few weeks. Wrap your ears around it below:
Similar to Jess Kent, Alex Lahey has been named one of the emerging artists to watch for 2016. As quoted from her Triple J Unearthed page "Alex Lahey is a songwriter based in Melbourne. She enjoys cats, Coopers Sparkling, her blue 1999 Corolla, Allen's Party Mix, fuzz pedals and soft poached eggs." Her anticipated debut EP titled "B Grade University" will be released in August later this year.
This already has been an amazing year for Alex Lahey, as she won the JP partnership (Josh Pyke, in conjunction with APRA, has brought back the Josh Pyke Partnership this year, which awards a lucky Australian musician with a $7500 grant to kick-start their music career!)
"Let's Go Out" has only recently been placed on Triple J rotation from being played numerous times on Triple J Unearthed. The single was introduced at the end of May on "Good Nights" with Linda which is a radio show on Triple J that showcases local emerging artists.
She will be in Sydney on the 15th July at Toyko Sing Song in Newtown to launch her single "Let's Go Out". The people have spoken & she is definately an artist to keep an eye on!
Have a great (shorter) week guys!
Cheers Amy
