It's the final week of October & it signifies the last week of my uni holidays! Today also means that I get my marks back for the semester (eek!) & so far I'm a whole case of emotions. I've got good positivity as a majority though, I know how much effort I have put into this so whats for you won't go past you. I guess I'm just a teensy bit excited now to get started again as I only have two semesters left & then I'm all done!
Well this time last week I was getting excited about seeing Laura Marling at the Enmore Theatre & boy was that a treat! The audience was treated to a more mature Laura, who sung most of her great tracks from her titled ablum "Short Movie". The theatre was dark with just a spotlight on Laura & her two sidekicks, the air was quiet & hush & her voice could just melt butter. I had goosebumps for most of the show, similar to the goosebumps I received when I saw First Aid Kit at the Metro Theatre last year. I think I just love it when an artist gets full reign to strip back & all you can really hear is them & not much else.
There was slight nostalgia when Laura played "Ghosts" (to my absolute delight!) this song was written when she was only 16! We're both close to the same quarter age & there's just something so innocent & lovely about hearing back what raw emotions you had as a teenager. Ghosts is basically reflecting on the past lovers that someone had, & what a person goes through when they meet someone new. My favourite part of the song is:
Lover please,
Do not,
Fall to your knees,
It's not,
Like I believe,
In everlasting love
(listen to "Ghosts" By Laura Marling here)
I have memories of my own as a teen writing lots of poems, journal entries & singing to myself around the house. Teenagers are usually quite emotional as so much is happening to them & they feel either too young to be taken seriously or too old to be considered as a child. Laura also did an amazing cover of "Do I Ever Cross Your Mind" by Dolly Parton & for the first time in all the gigs I've watched there was no encore. Fun fact about Laura, she believes in the tradition of awkward situations & how the British are great at keeping up that momentum. So for the Brits in the audience who feared the awkwardness of an encore they were then treated to a "second last song". A great show all up even if it were a brief visit from Laura to Aussie Shores.
I've really enjoyed being on uni holidays, for the first time in a while this recent weekend I had a fully jam packed weekend. It was just so nice to be out in the sunshine, soaking up the warmth & the kick arse blue skies. Which leads me to this week's track, an oldie but a goodie which you can listen to here:
"Sunlight" was released in 2011 by Bag Raiders, an Australian electronic band founded in 2006 through Modular Records. It's one of the top 25 songs that is played currently on my ipod & always seems to instantly put me in a good mood.
The music video I find hilariously cute, as its shows the love between a zoo keeper & her monkey. She helps him to escape the zoo, where they then spend the whole day road tripping, swapping milkshakes & partying it up in a night club. She wants to keep him forever but the zoo collects him back & she breaks him out again. Cracks start to show in their relationship when the monkey heavily drinks, smokes & leaves his clothes on the floor to an unfortunate ending of him being arrested & taken back into custody. My favourite part is:
When I see, your face It's like sunlight dripping You're just like (You're just like) You're just like Sunlight Sunlight
Sunlight has such a lovely effect on people, I find with the weather getting warmer that I have more energy to do things & more energy to get out of the house. Feeling warm beams of sun on your arms & faces has such a warming effect on the soul too & on that positive have a great week!
Cheers Amy
